The audience applauded non-stop for five minutes for the Dominican film starring Manny Pérez
By Rubén Darío Cruz
The house was full when "The Rope" showed at the National Theater on Saturday November 21 at the III Dominican Republic Global Film Festival. Dominican producer, actor and screenwriter, Manny Pérez, was present at the screening. A native of Baitoa, Santiago, Pérez expressed great satisfaction and appreciation at the large turnout for the movie.
An hour and forty minutes of action, suspense, drama and laughter; the film recreates the crude and violent reality Dominicans face as the result of growing crime and drug trafficking. The audience seemed to understand and share many of the social concerns put forward in this movie.
Many members of the cast and crew joined Pérez at the screening including Juan Fernández, Hemky Madera, Alfonso Rodríguez, Denise Quiñónez, Miguel Ángel Martínez and Pachy Méndez. “This is the best group of actors I have ever worked with,” was the sincere comment made by director Josh Crook.
Synopsis
Filmed between Santiago and Washington Heights, "The Rope" narrates the story of Luisito, a poor butcher from Baitoa. When Luisito witnesses the murder of his father, he is plagued with an unquenchable thirst for revenge.
Chief of the Secret Police, General Colón (Fernández), takes advantage of this and turns Luisito into a killing machine. Colón controls him with the promise that one day soon he will hand over Rafa, the drug dealer who killed his father. But the situation changes for Luisito when he runs into Jenny (Quiñónez), an old girlfriend with whom he gets another chance to do the right thing and find redemption.
