By Karla Astwood
Friday’s panel on “The Effects of Fishing” concluded the cycle offered for students at the Eduardo Brito Hall of the National Theater. The documentary “The End of the Line,” shown at the beginning of the event, served as an introduction to the discussion.
Rubén Torres, Director of the Reef Check Foundation; Claire Lewis, Producer of the documentary and José Infante, representative of CODOPESCA, were members of the panel.
Before beginning the 90-minutes film, producer Claire Lewis gave a brief summary of the film and the importance of the world’s oceans and fish.
There were more than 1,500 students from different schools at the panel discussion in Eduardo Brito Hall. Students came from inside and outside the capital from such schools as Las Americas School, El Gran Valiente, Otilia Peláez Educational Center, Libertad College, Víctor Garrido School, Pedro Henríquez Ureña School, José Dubeau School, San Cirilio Dominican Association of Jerusalem, among others. The students were able to ask the panelists questions after the film.
José Infante reminded students that it is the young people who must control the extinction of fish in the country. Rubén Torres showed pictures to help explain the different factors that make fishing unsustainable and what the company he works for develops to “improve the fishing industry in the country.”
