Five children who came up onto the stage to sing received prizes from P-Star Rising director

By Erlyn Rodríguez

Gabriel Noble, director of  P-Star Rising, was at the Mauricio Báez Cultural Center in Santo Domingo on Friday to participate in an open conversation with the public who attended the screening of his documentary P-Star Rising.

Before the screening, Noble spoke to the public, the majority of whom were students, about the film they were about to see, emphasizing the veracity of it. He talked about how he met Priscilla, the protagonist in the documentary. He apologized for not speaking much Spanish but said he’d do his best. “Please, don’t laugh at me,” he pleaded to the crowd who joined him in a laugh.

Before the film, a Dominican short was shown, Menudo Pa Cuanto which is about the lives of delivery people, how they began, what their goals are and why they do the kind of work they do. The film’s credits were accompanied by such rhythmic music that it got the audience clapping to the beat.

When it came time to discuss Noble’s film, he explained that it took four years to shoot it and “one more year to finish it up.” There were many questions from the audience such as: Does P-Star have a boyfriend? Does she go to school? What happened with her mother?

The session ended with Gabriel Noble getting the children to sing. Five of them joined him up on stage and showed they were quite good. For their performance, Noble gave them each a prize: posters and a CD of the movie.
