Film Synopsis - Long:
Argentinean director Carlos Sorín has made a name for himself as the foremost fictional chronicler of his country’s dreamers and drifters. His Historias Mínimas (2002) and Bombón: El Perro are road trips through the eccentric heart of the Argentine countryside, revealing more of the region’s hopes and travails—and remarkable landscapes—than a hundred documentaries.
His new film The Road to San Diego, follows Tati, 25, a poor, unemployed father of four. Also Tati loves Maradona. He’s his hugest fan in all of Argentina. One day, he finds a tree root that looks just like his idol. When Maradona falls ill, Tati heads for Buenos Aires, to give his hero the root. As the nation prays for Diego, Tati travels and makes friends along the way, as if touched by the grace of his mission. The Road to San Diego. humorous and lighthearted, but well-grounded in Argentine realities is possibly Sorín most audience-friendly work to date, a clever take on celebrity worship, pseudo-documentaries and, most of all, their undying devotion to their beloved hero, Diego “Hand of God” Maradona.
