Viewers of the film “The Pope´s Toilet” at the Mauricio Báez Club became aware of an entirely new concept of dreams as they observed the actions of the film´s protagonist, Beto, a poor man from the town of Melo, Uruguay. The visit of Pope John Paul II to this town caused a stir among its inhabitants who hoped the visit would somehow become an opportunity to lift them out of their poverty.

“Iron Road is an apology for the mistreatment of Chinese workers who helped build Canada´s railroads”

Charlotte Sullivan, actress in Iron Road, shown Thursday night in the National Theater, calmly and serenely told an audience of more than 150 people including representatives of the Chinese community, that the film “is an apology letter to the people of China for the mistreatment they suffered during the building of the railroads in Canada…it is also a love letter for the whole world.”

Inauguration of the II Dominican Global Film Festival: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event

It was a night to remember, without a doubt. Once-in-a-Lifetime. A heartfelt homage to the youth of the Dominican Republic who, with all their hopes and dreams and strengths shine among the best of the king of sports. The Second Edition of the Dominican Global Film Festival was inaugurated Wednesday night with the premier of the film Sugar, a North American film that tells the story of a Dominican baseball player from San Pedro de Macorís who wants to get into the Major Leagues to lift his family out of poverty.

Special Night Dedicated to the Chinese Community in the II Dominican Global Film Festival

There will be a faint fragrance of Asia this evening. The National Theater will host the projection of the film Iron Road, as part of the programming of the II Dominican Global Film Festival. The evening is an homage to the Chinese community of the Dominican Republic and there will be a few surprises: a photo exhibition on the History of Chinese Migration and a dance show with traditional lions and dragons. The Flower for Everyone Foundation has called this event the great homage to Chinese culture in the Dominican Republic.

Latin American Women Rise in Importance in the Film World

A panel on “Women on the Rise: the Emergence of Latin American Women in the Industry” was held to examine the difficulties encountered by Latin American women entering the seventh art. The panel was sponsored by Nicolas Reid, Dania Ramirez, and Raquel Cepeda of the Dominican Republic; Lourdes Portillo of Mexico and Esther Goris of Argentina; specialists in directing, producing, and acting.
