“The Women of Brukman” Huge Success at the FUNGLODE Showing
Santo Domingo, November 20, 2008

Minister of Women´s Affairs, Alejandrina Germán, asked that Isaac Istan´s documentary
be showed again because of its significance and positive message.

Asunción Sanz, Director of Promotion and Marketing of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), welcomed viewers and introduced the Canadian documentary, “The Women of Brukman.”

This feature film tells a marvelous and inspiring story about persevering and triumphing over the system. In 2001, the seamstresses of the Brukman Clothing Company of Argentina took over the operation of the factory the owners had abandoned. They reorganized it on a self-management model.

This fascinating documentary follows these brave women for many years showing a venture that started out as a means of survival and unwittingly turned into a movement that has led to more than 20,000 workers forming similar cooperatives to run more than 200 abandoned businesses.

The film demonstrates the importance of being engines for change and active citizens in the face of difficult situations, in addition to illustrating the importance of women today in societies around the world.

Following the screening of the documentary - winner of the Sundance Film Festival and the Montreal International Documentary Film Festival - film director Isaac Isitan held a panel discussion with viewers.

Minister of Women´s Affairs, Alejandrina Germán, attended this activity. She emphasized the important role of women in the world and asked the Film Festival organizers to schedule another screening of the film because of its important significance and positive message.
