MONIQUE vacillates between dotingly calling her daughter ‘My Sunbeam’ and ‘Helpless Cripple’. At age sixteen, NILSA really has a sunny disposition despite the fact that she is in a wheelchair. She is a sensitive, intelligent and very pretty young girl but she has become submissive and painfully shy under the manipulation and abuse of her mother. Monique has taught her daughter to be afraid of the world. She has forgotten the essence of the pure relationship between a mother and a daughter, and uses JIMMY (her love interest) to turn her face from reality.  She lives and works in that world and, for her, it has been a world of betrayal and disappointment. All Monique has is Nilsa and she intends to keep her.

Next door is an older lady who has never been a biological mother. But she is a wise, compassionate and strong Black woman of abiding faith. ESTHER leads an amazing children’s choir. It is inevitable that shy pretty Nilsa will touch Esther’s heart and that she will be moved to do something about the child’s situation. She will intervene in the most understanding and considerate manner imaginable but it is also inevitable that Esther will arouse the ire and violence of Monique.

Together they will all embark upon a journey where they discover just how important it is to forgive. Forgiveness is the key to healing and finally moving forward with our lives and with our relationships.
