Young@Heart Will be the Final Touch at the Second Dominican
Global Film Festival
Santo Domingo,
November 13, 2008
Stephen Walker´s heartwarming documentary about a senior
citizens´ choral group is expected to put the final touch on
this year´s Dominican Global Film Festival to be held from
November 19 to 23. Young@Heart will bring down the curtain of
the Festival, its films, educational activities and social
events, on Sunday 23 th. at 6:00 p.m. in Santo Domingo
National Theater.
The story has captivated those who´ve seen it and has drawn
praise from around the world at the many international film
festivals in which it has participated. To celebrate its
success, the Dominican Republic is honored to host several
members of the film´s cast beginning with its director Stephen
Walker, the director of the chorus upon which the story
centers, and four of the singers: Stephen Martin, Leonard
Fontaine, Dora Morrow, and Patricia Ervin.
The choral group Young@Heart, made up of retired people
between the ages of 72 and 88, was formed in 1982 in
Northampton, Massachusetts. Stephen Walker´s documentary
begins with the group making their travel plans for one of
their tours called “Alive and Well.” As viewers we get to sit
in on rehearsals and watch the singers wrestle with their
rendition of “Schizophrenia” by Sonic Youth or rehearse their
passionate interpretation of James Brown´s “I Feel Good.”
Young@Heart is pure inspiration as it reminds us of two things
we´ve heard all our lives: you can´t judge a book by its cover
and we´re never too old to pursue our dreams.
It has won two Rose d'Or awards, the Los Angeles Film Festival
Audience Award, the Atlanta Film Festival Audience Award, the
Sydney Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary, and
the Audience and Jury Awards at the Paris Cinema International
Film Festival
The film will also be shown in Santiago, with the cast members
and directors, on Saturday November 22 at 7:30 p.m.
