DRGFF Attends 2008 Cannes International Film Festival
New York, 6/23/2008
Representatives of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival (DRGFF), an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), attended the sixtieth edition of the Cannes International Film Festival, held May 13-24, 2008, in Cannes, France.
One of the world’s foremost international film festivals, acclaimed for setting the standards of cinematographic excellence, the Cannes Film Festival presents the best of international film to the motion-picture industry community. Since its inception in 1972, Cannes has served as a commercial platform, uniting industry buyers and sellers, and with the creation of the Producer’s Network in 2004, it now provides the valuable function of helping producers from across the globe to establish new partnerships with investors and other industry professionals. Showcasing over 80 international films and featuring the participation of over 30,000 actors and filmmakers, the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival offered the DRGFF team, represented by General Director, Natasha Despotovic, and Programming and Production Consultant, Nicole Guillemet, the opportunity to both identify films for the 2008 Dominican Republic Festival, and network with some of the most renowned and influential members of the global filmmaker community. Through participating in the event, DRGFF representatives were also able to gain valuable knowledge regarding the qualities fundamental to defining a festival, not only as a cultural event, but as a cultural phenomenon.
Moreover, the exercise of attending festivals of such distinction provides GFDD and FUNGLODE the possibility to elevate awareness of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival and the Global Media Arts Institute among international industry professionals.
DRGFF plays a leading role in nurturing film culture in the Dominican Republic by bringing the best of international narrative and documentary film to a wide audience. The Festival raises awareness and deepens understanding of global challenges while using film as a modern platform for the discussion of political, social and economic issues. DRGFF, together with GFDD and FUNGLODE’s Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI), supports capacity building, provides network opportunities for Dominican professionals, and fosters the development of a strong and sustainable national film industry.
