In addition to being organized by non-profit organizations, the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is distinguished for its role in promoting the DR as an excellent location to make and produce films, thus contributing to the Country's economic growth and competitiveness.
Mission
The Dominican Global Film Festival presents a selection of the best international, dramatic and documentary films to enrich the country’s film culture and to bring the seventh art into all sectors of Dominican society. The Festival contributes to raising awareness and understanding of global issues through stories about events and people that have left a mark on our lives. It uses film as a way to promote and encourage discussion about social issues, politics and economics.

To show a wide variety of films that are generally not available to the Dominican public.

The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is proud to honor and dedicate this year´s 5th edition of the Festival to María Montez, the first Dominican actress to achieve fame in Hollywood as she became a reference for filmmaking worldwide. Next year, 2012, is the 100 year anniversary of the birth of María Montez, “the Queen of Technicolor.” For that reason, the Dominican Global Film Festival has honor to of placing her name first on this year´s list of Tributes.
We are equally proud to welcome other national and international film and entertainment greats to this Festival. Welcome Geraldine Chaplin, Danny Glover, Vin Diesel, Agliberto Meléndez, Moctesuma Esparza and Rafael Solano.

Audience Awards (for best dramatic film and best documentary film), to be selected by ballot after each screening.

Film Synopsis
"The Keys of Independence" follows the adventures of Lazarus Exposito, a young revolutionary in the mid-nineteenth century in Mexico. The story narrates the life of a boy who, from birth, was adopted by Javier Artal, a member of a family of Spanish landowners including Iñigo, Javier and Mayte Artal. Lazarus is rejected by the elder brother of his father because of his race and ethnicity. This will mark him deeply as he grows up in a comfortable environment while never really feeling he fits in. As the story progresses, we see the mature Lazarus, strong in war but sweet in love, who will never learn the truth of his origin.
The story takes place in a hacienda being destroyed by the continuing armed conflict going on around it. Before the revolution, it was known as the famous Artal Brothers Hacienda who arrived from Spain with their wives and whose descendants were born in the new world. In the hacienda, our protagonist, Lazarus, is recalling episodes from his life as the characters and situations relentlessly slip into the past. Soon Mary appears. She is the wife of the once great Artal who always rejected and hated Lazarus. Teresita, his little sister, always loved him for saving her from her strict father. She is now a young girl still in love with her "Prince" of a brother.
Demetrio, John "the Evangelist" and "the Doctor" are the three trusted sidekicks of Lazarus, although Demetrius, the oldest, is the closest to him. These three, along with others led by Lazarus, will be responsible for overseeing the shipment of arms hidden in the hacienda which they will use to lead the insurrection. However, their mission is sabotaged...
A very important character in the story is the Mother Renunciation, Mayte Artal, who took refuge in a cloistered convent and changed her name once she decided to give up the love of her life and everything her social origin and position implied In short, this is a story of love, heartbreaks and unusual adventure which ends at a time and place not so far from us.
