A documentary, a film, a journey, a dream and a nightmare all at the same time. Whoever sees these images will be unable to escape. This is the objective of director, Angelo Rizzo, in making this “document.” "Shine a light on a reality that is not hidden, is not secret but rather, and worse yet, is ignored!" What can be more cowardly and shameful than to ignore the silent cry of young children who, at a tender young age, already know hell.
Lima a huge city divided into districts, alternating between luxury areas with hundreds of tourists such as Miraflores and Barranco and poverty-stricken neighborhoods that surround them like a slap in the Historical Center of the city. In Peru, child labor is prohibited by law but the children who do not attend school are ignored by the corrupt police who pretend not to see a whole army of child workers, exploited and ill. There are three million such children in all of Peru and more than a million in Lima alone. Images strong, direct, unfiltered. Testimonials and stories of their lives as told in their own voices.
Unfortunately the sense of helplessness is overwhelming. To do anything to help, to have an effect it is necessary to step away from the whirlwind that grips your stomach and makes you feel useless.
This documentary, with the children’s stories and interviews, tells of their lives which are often expressed with just a glance. The soundtrack that accompanies the images and text create an emotional outcome. The poetry of Khalil Gibran, voiced by Arnoldo Foa, together with a touch of magic, past and present, break down the confines of time as it fits neatly into the reality of the stories described.
The mixture of emotions, stories, backgrounds and faces penetrate the viewer. The images will end up moving the viewer although it is not necessary to be feel frightened because the sensation to be tested while watching the final titles will be positive and accompanied by a great desire to thank these little creatures who, telling us their stories in less than an hour, have helped us grow and perhaps become better people.
"Date with the Angels" has only one message, one thought, all dedicated to these little children, big and brave: Peru's Angels'.
