In addition to being organized by non-profit organizations, the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is distinguished for its role in promoting the DR as an excellent location to make and produce films, thus contributing to the Country's economic growth and competitiveness.
Mission
The Dominican Global Film Festival presents a selection of the best international, dramatic and documentary films to enrich the country’s film culture and to bring the seventh art into all sectors of Dominican society. The Festival contributes to raising awareness and understanding of global issues through stories about events and people that have left a mark on our lives. It uses film as a way to promote and encourage discussion about social issues, politics and economics.

To show a wide variety of films that are generally not available to the Dominican public.

The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is proud to honor and dedicate this year´s 5th edition of the Festival to María Montez, the first Dominican actress to achieve fame in Hollywood as she became a reference for filmmaking worldwide. Next year, 2012, is the 100 year anniversary of the birth of María Montez, “the Queen of Technicolor.” For that reason, the Dominican Global Film Festival has honor to of placing her name first on this year´s list of Tributes.
We are equally proud to welcome other national and international film and entertainment greats to this Festival. Welcome Geraldine Chaplin, Danny Glover, Vin Diesel, Agliberto Meléndez, Moctesuma Esparza and Rafael Solano.

Audience Awards (for best dramatic film and best documentary film), to be selected by ballot after each screening.

Film Nights at the National Theater
The large hall of Santo Domingo’s National Theater has once again become a venue for quality film projections as it hosts many movies that are part of the 5th edition of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival (DRGFF).
Film educates and entertains but it also uplifts the spirit and invites reflection. With this in mind, hundreds of students were brought from public schools to inaugurate the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival 2011 on Tuesday morning, November 15th.
“The Little Sun Seller” was shown to the delighted students who enjoyed, on the big screen, the story of overcoming problems when one sets a goal and perseveres.
The lobby of the National Palace was the arrival point of those who walked the Blue Carpet this year to officially begin the Festival. The spectacle, looked forward to each year, was watched by many Dominicans who lined the carpet or those who watched from home on their televisions.
The opening film of the Festival was “Jaque Mate” (Checkmate), by the young Dominican, José María Cabral, whose film was shown to a full house including President Leonel Fernández and the First Lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernández as well as invited actors including such luminaries as Geraldine Chaplin and Danny Glover.
Camera flashes mixed with smiles from the large number of international guests as well as national artists who joined this annual cultural event, now in its 5th year. This was the most spectacular part of the event with the National Theater as the host.
Throughout the week, other films continued to show at the theater. On Thursday and Friday, the 17th and 18th, films viewed here included “Being Elmo: Diary of a Puppeteer,” and “Soy Cumbio.” On Friday the 20th, “Harry Belafonte: Sing your Song” was shown. Each day, students from different schools and colleges enjoyed movies which brought them into contact with personal stories and situations of normal people and their daily lives.
The didactic function of film is reflected each year in the National Theater when the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival converts it into a film projection hall that shows high quality movies for large audiences.
“Americano”, “Miss Bala” and “Lope” were seen on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, respectively, attracting a diverse audience: people who come every year to see good films, families which enjoy the solemnity of the theater and students whose minds are awakened by the world of moving pictures.
Closing night featured “Chico and Rita” and the selection of the 3 winners of the III Dominican Short Film Competition which maintained the tone of spectacle and quality entertainment and, above all, the didactic element that characterizes the Dominican Global Film Festival.
