In addition to being organized by non-profit organizations, the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is distinguished for its role in promoting the DR as an excellent location to make and produce films, thus contributing to the Country's economic growth and competitiveness.
Mission
The Dominican Global Film Festival presents a selection of the best international, dramatic and documentary films to enrich the country’s film culture and to bring the seventh art into all sectors of Dominican society. The Festival contributes to raising awareness and understanding of global issues through stories about events and people that have left a mark on our lives. It uses film as a way to promote and encourage discussion about social issues, politics and economics.

To show a wide variety of films that are generally not available to the Dominican public.

The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is proud to honor and dedicate this year´s 5th edition of the Festival to María Montez, the first Dominican actress to achieve fame in Hollywood as she became a reference for filmmaking worldwide. Next year, 2012, is the 100 year anniversary of the birth of María Montez, “the Queen of Technicolor.” For that reason, the Dominican Global Film Festival has honor to of placing her name first on this year´s list of Tributes.
We are equally proud to welcome other national and international film and entertainment greats to this Festival. Welcome Geraldine Chaplin, Danny Glover, Vin Diesel, Agliberto Meléndez, Moctesuma Esparza and Rafael Solano.

Audience Awards (for best dramatic film and best documentary film), to be selected by ballot after each screening.

Film’s star, Fernando Carrillo, attends the screening and thanks the audience for their support.
Fernando Carrillo caused a stir when he arrived at the Film Palace at the Blue Mall to present “Las llaves de la independencia” (Keys to Independence). His numerous fans were waiting to see him and his latest movie about the Mexican Revolution.
The film, directed by Carlos Gil, elicited effusive applause when it ended. The audience made no pretense to hide its collective passion for this genre of film with its historical review of the conflicts that lead up to Mexican independence in the middle of the 19th century, replete with love and adventure.
The Venezuelan actor, Fernando Carrillo, showed a very different side of his acting abilities from those required by his normal soap opera roles. In this film he played the brave revolutionary commander Lázaro Expósito. The strength of this character radiated more from his personal courage rather than his physical feats on the battlefield.
The 111-minute drama captivated all present as the plot developed and included revolutionary priests and nuns, peasants and daughters abandoned by their wealthy families who fled the county. It is also a love story among family members, nuns who live behind the walls of a cloister to help the revolution, all leading up to a unique and unexpected ending.
“Las llaves de la independencia”, has a cast of Latin American film stars that includes Fernando Luján, Charo López, José Sancho and Miguel Molina.
When the film ended, Fernando Carrillo thanked the enthusiastic audience for such a warm welcome and for their support of the film.
Carrillo is one of the most important guests of this 5th edition of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival which gave his fans the chance to see him on a large screen after knowing him so well on a small screen.
Synopsis
"The keys of Independence" follows the adventures of Lazarus Exposito, a young revolutionary in the mid-nineteenth century in Mexico. The story narrates the life of a boy who, from birth, was adopted by Javier Artal, a member of a family of Spanish landowners including Iñigo, Javier and Mayte Artal. Lazarus is rejected by the elder brother of his father because of his race and ethnicity. This will mark him deeply as he grows up in a comfortable environment while never really feeling he fits in. As the story progresses, we see the mature Lazarus, strong in war but sweet in love, who will never learn the truth of his origin.
