    About the Festival

    In addition to being organized by non-profit organizations, the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is distinguished for its role in promoting the DR as an excellent location to make and produce films, thus contributing to the Country's economic growth and competitiveness.

    Mission

    The Dominican Global Film Festival presents a selection of the best international, dramatic and documentary films to enrich the country’s film culture and to bring the seventh art into all sectors of Dominican society. The Festival contributes to raising awareness and understanding of global issues through stories about events and people that have left a mark on our lives. It uses film as a way to promote and encourage discussion about social issues, politics and economics.

    Goals

    To enrich the film culture of the Dominican Republic.

    To show a wide variety of films that are generally not available to the Dominican public.

    The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is proud to honor and dedicate this year´s 5th edition of the Festival to María Montez, the first Dominican actress to achieve fame in Hollywood as she became a reference for filmmaking worldwide. Next year, 2012, is the 100 year anniversary of the birth of María Montez, “the Queen of Technicolor.” For that reason, the Dominican Global Film Festival has honor to of placing her name first on this year´s list of Tributes.

    We are equally proud to welcome other national and international film and entertainment greats to this Festival. Welcome Geraldine Chaplin, Danny Glover, Vin Diesel, Agliberto Meléndez, Moctesuma Esparza and Rafael Solano.

    The prizes include the following: An iMac, The opportunity to make a short film under the auspices of the Dominican film production company, Panamericana, Scholarships to study at the Film School at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (EICTV), Free online courses for one year offered by www.video2brain.com

    2. Audience Awards (for best dramatic film and best documentary film), to be selected by ballot after each screening.

This year the 3rd annual Short Film Contest of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival has accepted 44 films among nearly 100 entries

Dominican Global Film Festival Opens in Santiago with “Americano”

The V Dominican Global Film Festival (DRGFF) was inaugurated in Santiago with the screening of the film, “Americano,” by French director and actor Mathieu Demy. The film screening followed the opening ceremony which began at 7 pm at the Centro Universitario Regional de Santiago (CURSA).

Festival de Cine Global Dominicano se inicia en Santiago con la película “Americano”Yvette Marichal, director of Public Relations and Marketing for the DRGFF and Elis Pérez, Director of the General Office of Film, headed the opening event along with other personalities from the province of Santiago.

“Americano” is one of the highest quality films brought by the DRGFF which is now in its 5th year. The Festival will last until Sunday, November 20th and is being held in various venues in addition to Santiago: Santo Domingo, Cap Cana, Higűey, Nagua and Haitian capital Port au Prince.

This year the DRGFF will also be offering panels and workshops in Santiago which will allow the public to interact with filmmakers and others involved in the industry including actors with whom they can exchange ideas and ask questions about their films.

Venezuelan actor Fernando Carrillo, will be in Santiago on Thursday November 17th to give an acting workshop. The TV, film actor and model will be at the Palacio del Cine, at 6:00 pm. Carillo made his film debut in "El Caracazo." Another of his well-known films is being shown at this year’s Festival, “Las Llaves De La Independencia.”

Sharlene Taule and Frank Perozo will also be in Santiago to talk about their most recent movie, “Jaque Mate” (Checkmate) by director José María Cabral. They will be talking at the Teatro del Cibao on Saturday the 19th at 10:00 am.

Ms. Taule, directs the program “Grachi”, which is a TV series with one of the the largest audiences in Latin America. Frank Perozo is preparing to make a new film in the DR.

Other films to be shown throughout the Festival in Santiago include: “¿Para qué sirve un Oso?”, “Ser un Ser humano”, “Ser Elmo: El diario de un titiritero”, “Americano”, “Gun Hill Road”, “Vuelve a la vida” and “G.W.B”. The Film.

Unable to cope with the death of his mother, Martin decides to go to Tijuana in search of Lola, a Mexican woman he knew as a boy and who had a special place in his mother’s life. Finally, he finds the "American," a private club where Lola works every night as a stripper. To relieve his grief, Martin will have to reconnect with his past. Starring Mathieu Demy, Salma Hayek, Geraldine Chaplin, Chiara Mastroiani and Carlos Bardem.
