In addition to being organized by non-profit organizations, the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is distinguished for its role in promoting the DR as an excellent location to make and produce films, thus contributing to the Country's economic growth and competitiveness.
The Dominican Global Film Festival presents a selection of the best international, dramatic and documentary films to enrich the country’s film culture and to bring the seventh art into all sectors of Dominican society. The Festival contributes to raising awareness and understanding of global issues through stories about events and people that have left a mark on our lives. It uses film as a way to promote and encourage discussion about social issues, politics and economics.
To enrich the film culture of the Dominican Republic.
To show a wide variety of films that are generally not available to the Dominican public.

The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is proud to honor and dedicate this year´s 5th edition of the Festival to María Montez, the first Dominican actress to achieve fame in Hollywood as she became a reference for filmmaking worldwide. Next year, 2012, is the 100 year anniversary of the birth of María Montez, “the Queen of Technicolor.” For that reason, the Dominican Global Film Festival has honor to of placing her name first on this year´s list of Tributes.

The short films finalists will be shown at the Festival between Tuesday the 15 of November until Sunday the 20th at all of the various venues of the Festival. They will be shown before each of the feature films or documentaries.
The Dominican Global Film Festival (DRGFF) will announce the 11 finalists of the III Short Film Competition and, according to DRGFF organizers, the films will be shown from November 15 to 20th at numerous movie theaters and screening halls.
The finalists are: Bajo la Mesa, Bienvenida a Casa, Cara // Escudo, Casimente, El Dinero, !Hola Mamá!, Iguales, Irresponsabilidad Cívica, La Mujer, Promesa de Lechón y Regresión.

The final three winners will be announced at the end of the Festival on November 20th at the National Theater at 6 pm prior to the office closure of the Festival. Second and third place winners will receive a scholarship to take a film workshop at the UCLA Film School in Los Angeles, California as well as a chance to attend the Film and TV School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (EICTV in Spanish), respectively. The short film entries are in the genre of fiction, animation, documentaries and fantasy. Organizers of the contest received film entries up until September 2011.
Ronny A. Sosa is the director of “Bajo la Mesa”. Synopsis: Two days after the disappearance of Narciso González, Rolando, the oldest in a family of orphans, is attacked by the police at a protest. He goes home to get a gun and return for revenge but when he gets there he changes his plan when he sees how upset his 2 younger sisters are.
Yahaira Paulino is the director of “Bienvenida a Casa”. Synopsis: Sarah goes back to her town in the Dominican Republic after her grandmother´s death and find she cannot escape her past.
Violeta Lockhart is the director of “Cara // Escudo”. Synopsis: A young man lives his life according to the twists of fate and constantly makes choices by tossing a coin, something which makes his girlfriend very uncomfortable. But there comes a day when everything is put to the test in their relationship.
Alan Nadal Piantini directed “Casimente”. Synopsis: A surprise break-up for a couple. One of them is in for a life surprise.
Alberto Matos is the director of “El Dinero”. Synopsis: Returning home one night, Juan runs into a prostitute who drops her money. Juan picks it up and later doesn´t know what to do with it. It causes more confusion than it is worth.
Miguel Alcántara is director of !Hola Mamá!. Synopsis: Gustavo is a young musician who has become distanced from his mother as a result of his artistic commitment and family resentments. Arriving back home after a tour abroad, his mother surprises him in his apartment where she expresses her unconditional love and asks him for forgiveness and to rectify past errors. She does this while preparing him a special dinner which he will never forget.
Claudia López directed “Iguales”. Synopsis: The story of innocence lost when a young boy cannot understand why his mother does not allow him to continue playing with his best friend.
Jahnna Jones is director of “Irresponsabilidad Cívica”. Synopsis: The story is based on a car accident and what happens after when a man is nominated for an art prize.
Jesús Reyes Mota es director of “La Mujer”. Synopsis: Chepe is leaving his house to go out to his little plot of farmland. He says goodbye to his wife who sells goats milk. His wife decides to give the milk to their little boy who is hungry and they don´t have enough food for him. When Chepe gets home, he is furious and physically attacks his wife. Quico intervenes in her defense and confronts Chepe. When the woman sees that Quico is strangling her husband, she picks up a stone and hits Quico over the head, killing the man who was defending her.
Manuel Valerio and Charlie Jorge are the directors of “Promesa de Lechón”. Synopsis: Sr. is an elderly grandfather who has been dressing up for the Carnival his whole life, but now he is sick. His grandson is begging to see him in his costume and even though he is sick, he agrees. In the middle of the Carnival parade, he has a heart attack and dies. The grandson, at the cemetery, promises his dead grandfather that he will be a Carnival character, known as a lechon, for the rest of his life.
Soraya Mateo is the director of “Regresión”. Synopsis: Carlos is a disturbed man. He has nightmares that won´t let him sleep. His wife Sara is tired of the mistreatment and anxiety. It is time to find a reason behind this problem and to confront it, even if it means the loss of everything.
