In addition to being organized by non-profit organizations, the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is distinguished for its role in promoting the DR as an excellent location to make and produce films, thus contributing to the Country's economic growth and competitiveness.
The Dominican Global Film Festival presents a selection of the best international, dramatic and documentary films to enrich the country’s film culture and to bring the seventh art into all sectors of Dominican society. The Festival contributes to raising awareness and understanding of global issues through stories about events and people that have left a mark on our lives. It uses film as a way to promote and encourage discussion about social issues, politics and economics.

The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival is proud to honor and dedicate this year´s 5th edition of the Festival to María Montez, the first Dominican actress to achieve fame in Hollywood as she became a reference for filmmaking worldwide. Next year, 2012, is the 100 year anniversary of the birth of María Montez, “the Queen of Technicolor.” For that reason, the Dominican Global Film Festival has honor to of placing her name first on this year´s list of Tributes.

The V edition of the DRGFF will bring to the country such entertainers as Fernando Carillo, Manolo Cardona, Adrián Mas, and Dominicans Celinés Toribio, Juan Fernández, Martha González, Frank Perozo and Sharlene Taulé, among others. The will participate in the screenings, panels and workshops.
The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival (DRGFF), in its 5th edition, has invited scores of well-known Latin American film industry greats such as Fernando Carillo and Manolo Cardona, who will participate in activities which are open to the public throughout this spectacular cultural event. Joining them will be Adrián Mas, star of the film, “Jaque Mate” (Checkmate), directed by José María Cabral, which will be the opening night film in Santo Domingo.
Carrillo, who became well-known for his roles in popular soap operas, will give an acting workshop at the Nagua Regional Center of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (CURNA) on Saturday, November 19 at 10 am.
The most recent acting role of the Venezuelan movie star can be enjoyed at the Festival with the screening of his latest movie, “Las Llaves De La Independencia” which will show on Thursday the 17th at 7:00 pm in the Palacio del Cine of Santiago de los Caballeros and again on Friday the 18th at 7:00 pm in the Blue Mall Film Palace. He will be present at both screenings and with share and discuss audience commentaries on the film.
He will talk about his artistic trajectory and how it led him to film, television and modeling. His successes are continuous and seem to be of greater and greater importance. He debuted in a film with a movie called “Caracazo.” Another of his outstanding acting roles came in “Las Llaves De La Independencia” (Keys to Independence).
Manolo Cardona, who is coming to Santo Domingo at the height of his career, will take part in the presentation of the premiere of “El cártel de los sapos” (The Snitch´s Cartel) on Thursday, the 17th at 9 pm at the Blue Mall.
These popular actors will be sharing various stages at the Festival with the famous American movie stars, Geraldine Chaplin and Danny Glover.
Sharlene Taule and Frank Perozo, on the other hand, with share the stage of the Cibao Theater on Saturday the 19th at 10 am where they will give an acting workshop and share their impressions of their own careers. Taulé and Perozo are both in the opening night film, “Jaque Mate” (Checkmate).
Well-known directors are also participating in this year´s 2011 edition of the DRGFF. Antonio Saura, José Antonio Escrivá and Patricio Castilla will all be on a panel in which they discuss and debate just how to get a story from the script to the screen, keeping in mind the details that go into the plot and script: camera direction, editing, acting, composition and sound design. This panel will be held at the office of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), on Thursday the 17th at 9 am.
Rubirosa and María Montez: Analysis of two mythic Dominican figures.
Among the novelties of the 5th edition of the Festival are two thematic panels: one on the life and career of María Montez who, as a Dominican actress won the hearts and minds of Hollywood then the world. The second thematic panel will be on the Dominican “playboy” whose loves included, but was not limited to, famous movie stars. Now the story of his life will be told on the big screen.
Margarita Vincens De Morales and Celinés Toribio will be taking part in the thematic panel about Montez at FUNGLODE on Thursday the 17th at 4 pm. They will review Ms. Montes´ acting roles in 26 films, her triumphs in Italy and France, the beauty she eradiated in those early days of Technicolor. They will also look at how she became the queen of the golden age of Hollywood. Vincens de Morales and Celinés Toribio are working on a cinema project that seeks to recreate the life of Maria Montes, who is originally from Barahona.
Speaking about Rubirosa will be Isabela Wall, Marty Wall and Kalil Haché. Isabela and Marty Wall will be approaching the panel discussion from the point of view of two producers working on a film about the Dominican Don Juan. Kalil Haché, on the other hand, will be talking from the point of view of having been a very close friend of Rubirosa, a former diplomat who died tragically in Paris. This panel will be held on Friday the 18th at 3 pm in the Pedro Mir Library of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
