"Filly Brown" Opens the VI Dominican Global Film Festival

The most important film event was organized with a special tribute to be paid to Luisito Martí and Germany as the invited Guest of Honor.

(Santo Domingo, November 14, 2012)- The actor Edward James Olmos, film producers Enrique González Macho, Sandra Condito and Manuel Pérez Estremera were among the special guests honored at the opening ceremony of the VI edition of the Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD), held on Wednesday at the National Theater. These guests received special tribute for their contributions to film. The late actor and comedian, Luisito Martí, also received special recognition.

In addition to these artists and filmmakers, other notables in the world of film were present to inaugurate the VI edition of the FCGD. These included director of photography Phillip Bloom and Dominicans Juan Fernández, Luis José López, Robmariel Olea and Ramsés Jiménez. Other guests included Sonya Smith, Juan Pablo Llano and Sophie Rois.

Following the inaugural ceremony, FCGD Director, Omar de la Cruz and Public Relations Director Yvette Marichal, introduced the opening night film Filly Brown, and its directors Michael Olmos and Youssef Delara.

FCGD films will be shown daily through Wednesday November 21 in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Cap Cana, Nagua and Port au Prince, Haiti. This year’s guest of honor is Germany, giving the Dominican viewing public a unique opportunity to become familiar with a series of excellent German films.


Freddy Ginebra and María Elena Núñez were the evening’s hosts at the gala opening ceremony, which was overseen by the FCGD team under the direction of Omar de la Cruz and PR Director Yvette Marichal. Marco Herrera, Executive Director FUNGLODE and Ellis Pérez, head of the General Directorate of Film were also introduced at the ceremony.


One of the most moving moments of the evening was the presentation of the newly established Maria Montes Award for Best Dominican Film which carries a cash prize of RD$200,000. The Maria Montes Award was set up by the General Directorate of Film, under Mr. Perez.    

The prize went to Agliberto Meléndez, for his 1989 classic film Un pasaje de ida (One Way Ticket)

In Santo Domingo, films will be showing at the Film Palace of the Agora Mall and Blue Mall; the Mauricio Báez; Cultural Center; Telecommunications Cultural Center and the Dominican Cinematheque. In Santiago, films will show at the Film Palace of Bella Terra.

Panels and acting workshops continue to be one of the main attractions of the FCGD. There are more than 20 panels, including “The role of the press in the film industry” with the participation of Juan Carlos Arciniegas, of CNN; Jorge Cámara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association; Carlos Gómez Iniesta, of Cine Premiere, Mexico. They shared the stage with Alfonso Quiñones, editor of the magazine of Diario Libre; Armando Almánzar, of Listín Diario, and Félix Manuel Lora, of the online film magazine www.Cinemadominicano.com


Throughout the Festival, the eleven finalists of the IV Short Films Competition will be shown at the various film venues. The films are: "Prisioner 614", "Subterráneo", "El primer día", "Un pacto con la soledad", "El Fotógrafo", "Talion", "Mirada de payaso", "Amor en vano", "Desobediencia", "Sofia" and "Dago". 


FCGD organizers also took the opportunity to acknowledge support from the Embassy of Germany; Spain (through the Spanish Agency for International Development); Switzerland and  the United States (through the Franklin Center) as well as the Dominico-German Center and Goethe Institute.
