“Boys of Summer” Screened in National Theater as 4th Edition of Dominican Republic Global Film Festival Kicks Off
Santo Domingo, November 16, 2010
Santo Domingo´s National Theater was buzzing today as the film, ¨Boys of Summer,¨ showed to an enthusiastic crowd mostly comprised of members of the General Belisario Peguerro Guerrero Police Academy. The teens cheered on Curacao´s young baseball players as they made their way from their Caribbean island of 138,000 people all the way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania (USA).
¨Wonderful spirit, wonderful music, wonderful film and the players are so cute,¨ gushed one of the girls from the Police Academy. During the post-screening discussion period, sponsored by organizers of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival (DRGFF), more than a few female students, in their crisp uniforms, could not and did resist the urge to walk right onto the stage and hug the two young baseball players from Curacao who are in the Dominican Republic with the film’s director, Keith Aumont and Curacao native and film producer, Jennifer Van Der Kwast.
This is director Keith Aumont’s first feature film and he is thrilled to be showing it at the DRGFF.
“This film festival means the world to me. I am so moved to be here in the Dominican Republic and to be here with these boys,” said Aumont. He added that while “baseball in the Caribbean is like no other place,” he chose Curacao because his wife and producer Jennifer is from the Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela.
“I love baseball but this film is not just about 14 boys…it is about the families, community and the 138,000 people of Curacao who support them and boost their confidence.”
“Boys of Summer” will show again on Wednesday November 17th in Puerto Plata and on Thursday the 18th in Higuey.
The DR Global Film Festival, underway this week from November 16-22, is screening films in seven different locations around the country including Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Cap Cana, Higuey, Nagua and, for the first time ever, in Port au Prince, Haiti as Dominicans, under President Leonel Fernandez, continue to extend support and solidarity to Haiti in addition to their ongoing efforts to further cultural links with their neighboring country.
