Fourth Dominican Republic Global Film Festival to Involve Haiti and its Cinemas

The DRGFF will extend its film screenings and activities to neighboring Haiti as part its support for cultural development on this island shared by both nations. The fourth edition of the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival will be showing films in two locations in Port au Prince, starting November 16th when the Festival officially opens.

The 4th Dominican Republic Global Film Festival will include Port au Prince as one of its venues for showing its films and holding activities, according to an announcement made here in the Haitian capital during a visit by DRGFF organizers, here to undertake coordination of the upcoming festival.

Omar de la Cruz, director of the DRGFF, led the coordinating team and technical personnel who formally began the organizational work that will involve the preparation for film screenings and educational activities throughout the Festival, which runs from November 16 to 22.

“Film Under the Moonlight” will take place in Parc Historique de la Canne à Sucre and the Kiosque Occyde Jeanty du Champs de Mars, is a DRGFF initiative that is part of the cooperation goals to promote the development of the Haitian film industry following last January’s ´s devastating earthquake.

Port au Prince is joining the other five Dominican cities as screenings venues: Santo Domingo, Santiago, Nagua, Puerto Plata, Higüey and Cap Cana. This move represents a step in the consolidation of the Festival as well as confirming it relevance in various sectors of the population.

Those who met with De la Cruz in Haiti include members of the local organizing team: Phénil Gordon Désir, president of the United Nations Association of Haiti (WFUNA); Jean Venel Casseus, reporter from Radio Caraibes; Smoye Noisy, filmmaker, actor and journalist; Martin Telemaque, representative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication; Dieudonne Fardin: representative of FUNGLODE in Haiti.

Also present were Jacque Roc, filmmaker; Paul Villefranche, journalist and reporter for Eclair Radio and Television; Lucien Jura, journalist; Kepler Hyacinthe, journalist from Haitian National Television; Ruffy Castor, Dominican Consul in Haiti and Ashkard-Joseph Pierre, member of WFUNA; Wandro Quiroz, Technical Director for the DRGFF; Rafael Reyes and Manuel Amezquita, co-directors of the organization along with a Nathanael Concepcion.
