The official list of Oscar nominations for 2010 include “The Milk of Sorrow” ( “La Teta Asustada”) from Peru in the category of Best Foreign film. “The Cove”  and “Food,  Inc.” competed in the category of Best Documentary. Recently the Golden Globes nominated three productions also presented at the Dominican Film Festival.

La tta AsustadaThe other Golden Globe nominated films shown at the Festival, Organized by the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and it sister organization in the United States, the Global Foundation Democracy and Development (GFDD), are “The Maid” and “Broken Embraces” in the Best Foreign Film category along with “500 Days of Summer” as Best Comedy or Musical and Best Actor in a comedy or musical.

With these Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival fulfills its commitment to bring the Dominican public the best film from around the world under the festival's slogan of “global issues, personal stories.”

The Peruvian “The Milk of Sorrow” will compete with the Argentine “The Secret of Her Eyes” and the French, “Un prophète"; the Israelí "Ajami" and the German “The White Ribbon.”

“Food, Inc.” and  “The Cove” competed alongside “Burma VJ”; “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers” and “Which Way Home.”

The Cove“The Milk of Sorrow” is the second film of Peruvian director Claudia Llosa ("Madeinusa"), with which she reaffirms her reputation as one of the most interesting directors in Latin America. Actress Magaly Solier plays the lead role in the story about the psychological illness suffered by children born to victims of rape in Peru, most of which occurred during the horrible years of war in the 1970s.

“The Cove,” which begins in Taiji, Japan, where former dolphin Richard O’Barry arrives to confront the situation of dolphin abuse as he seeks his own redemption. In 1960 he was the one who did the dolphin capturing and training for the popular TV series “Flipper.” But his close relationship with the dolphins brought him to a  radical realization and change of attitude about their treatment.   He realized that these creatures, profoundly sensitive and amazingly intelligent and self-aware are adapted to life in the open ocean and should not be kept in captivity.

“Food, Inc.” is a documentary by producer and director Robert Kenner and authors and researchers Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma) who seek to reveal the unknown aspects of the food industry in the United States. They show an industry that puts financial gain above the health of the consumer, the food producers and farmers, the safety and well being of the workers and our environment.
