Certificados para los cortometrajes seleccionadosIt’s not just about dance. And it doesn’t fit into the traditional idea we might have about a documentary. It is a mixture of documentary, news reportage, interviews, beautiful photographs and music all wrapped up in the world of dance and in two names, two young people: Isabela and Irlan. They are teenagers from Rio de Janeiro’s poor neighborhoods who, despite their impoverished background, have dreams that overcome any barrier.

Director Beadie Finzi came upon the two dancers when researching social issues to work into a film project. The story of the teens crossed her path – small stories of universal longing and dreams.

The result is nothing less than a gem that takes the viewer, in less than 2 hours, through a universe of emotions and an entire gallery of individuals connected to these two teenage dancers.

Certificados para los cortometrajes seleccionadosOne of them is Irlan Santos, who has been circulating at the Festival and participating in various screenings of the film. He has stood before the public whose applause and admiration have been overwhelming; they have opened their hearts to him and, at the same time, have identified with the story of his dreams, his longings and his achievements as if they were their own.

Accompanied by the film’s director, Irlan was at the Mauricio Báez Club where he saw the reaction of the public which was made up primarily of very young people from one of the most solid working class neighborhoods in Santo Domingo: Villa Juana.

Irlan’s attitude throughout the film gives one a look at why he is achieving so many of his personal goals. From the favelas of Rio he has traveled to various places around the world, winning important dance competitions along the way, from Switzerland to New York.

But his attitude when he is in front of a crowd is gracious as he smiles, responds to questions, thanks people for compliments and makes connections with dozens of other children who approach him.

It is no wonder that the warm welcome and applause from the public felt like they were as much a part of the event as Irlan himself.
