(Santo Domingo, Nov 17, 2012).- Dominican actress, Katherine Dickson, played the mother in Giovanny Blanco’s The Last Intervention, a role she had no problem relating to. “I have teenage children so it was easy for me to bring the anxiety that mother’s have about their children to the role with me.”
After reading the script, written by Sarah Thorpe, Katherine said she was in tears. When Gianny told her it was a comedy, she figured that she would never get the part. But when Giovanny called her on Skype from Los Angeles to her home in New York City for a second interview, something made him choose her immediately.
“I actually don’t know how to use Skype so, I was yelling at my son to come and help me with the computer and the camera. I was getting nervous and annoyed with my son and the computer. Little did I know that Giovanny was seeing and hearing everything that was going on with my son and me. I got the part immediately!”
While at the Arroyo Hondo High School in Santo Domingo, Katherine studied music, song and dance at the School of Fine Arts for three years. She took her last year of High School in New York City then went on to Hunter College and majored in Chemistry. “My parents thought I should get a degree in something practical,” she said. Several years later, she got a Masters in Musical Theater, started a production company and also pursued her career as an actress.
One of Katherine’s goals is to see more Latino and Spanish-speaking actors in roles other than “servants and thieves. I would like to see Latinos represented as the normal people we are in features about all aspects of our lives which are like everyone else’s,” said Katherine.
She added that the Dominican Global Film Festival has been a wonderful experience and she is happy to see so much Dominican and Latina talent on display in one place.
Katherine has had many film roles, including Salt, Bittersweets, Split Ends. She is Owner and CEO of Guapa Films, LLC a film production company dedicated to producing unique and thought-provoking independent movies.
