The DR Global Film Festival has an inclusive spirit and a strong educational and outreach component. In order to achieve the objective of attracting the projects from studios and independent producers to the country, the Festival complements the work the Global Media Arts Institute does throughout the year with a broad program of panels, workshops and master classes (15 in total) to further the training of young filmmakers and continuing the education of full fletched professionals. The Festival wants to bring into the fold all groups of Dominican society by offering participative panels and discussions (10) around the subjects brought up by the films shown, all of them referred to the challenges most individuals must face sooner or later in this globalized world. All these proposals are of interest; all are engaging and stimulating. To register for the panels please contact Katherine Acosta sending an email or calling

Thematic Panel on Threats to Marine Mammal Conservation
Thecruel slaughter of dolphins that takes place every year in the province of Taiji in southern Japan and is depicted in the documentary film The Coveis just one of the many threats that declining marine mammal populations face around the world. A panel of national experts, including leading marine biologists and The Covecast and crew will discuss the ethical implications of killing dolphins and keeping them captive, as well as the ever present threat of renewed whaling for future conservation efforts.
As a recent member of the International Whaling Commission, the Dominican Republic has played an active roles in the conservation of marine mammals, and was the first in the region to establish the Silver Bank Humpback Whale Sanctuary in 1986, in order to protect the mating, calving and nursery grounds of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae). Since then, the country has followed suit as a global pioneer, establishing the first "sister sanctuary" arrangement between the NOAA Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Massachusetts and the Marine Mammal Sanctuary of the Dominican Republic, two marine protected areas 1,500 miles apart that provide conservation programs for the North Atlantic humpback whale population on both ends of its range. A main objective of the panel is to reaffirm and encourage the protectionist and conservationist policies the country has historically observed for the last 23 years.

Discussion Session on Overfishing and its Global Consequences
The End of the Line
Overfishing is one of the world's greatest and most immediate environmental problems. According to the Food and Agriculture Administration (FAO), 75 per cent of wild marine fish are either fully-exploited or overfished and in serious need of conservation and management efforts in order to survive in their present numbers. Scientists predict that if we continue fishing at current levels, we will see the end of most seafood by 2048. Despite the magnitude of the problem, the solutions could prove relatively simple. A panel of national experts, including leading marine biologists will discuss the local impacts of overfishing and highlight what can be done to tackle this pressing problem.
