Santo Domingo, Nov 20 2013 – Mexico will be the country Guest of Honor at the 8th Dominican Global Film Festival in 2014, announced Festival Director Omar de la Cruz, at an event prior to the screening of Amor a Primera Visa (Love at First Visa) at the Blue Mall Cinema Palace on Wednesday night.

Omar de la Cruz told the audience at the closing event of the FCGD, that during the 10 days of this year’s Festival, over 25 film projects came to light that will be developed by the national and international film industry. He announced that the 8th edition of the FCGD will take place November 11-21 next year, 2014.

Dr. Leonel Fernández, president of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE); Ellis Pérez, director of the General Director of (DGCINE) and the Ambassador from Mexico to the Dominican Republic, José Ignacio Piña attended the formal closing ceremony of the Film Festival.

Dr. Fernández, former Dominican president, said the Dominican Global Film Festival has acquired a more professional character and has improved greatly in technical areas. He also praised the excellent choice of films that were shown over the ten-day Festival. 

Ambassador José Ignacio Piña told reporters at the event on Wednesday that it is an honor for his country to be part of the 8th Dominican Global Film Festival, and that he looks forward to the challenge of coming up with an unforgettable selection of films from his country.

Representing the film Amor a Primera Visa was actress Aurora Papile who thanked the Festival for the warm reception it gave the movie and her. She mentioned the other Mexican films that were shown at the Festival this year, including those by filmmakers like Carlos Cuarón and Rafa Lara. Ms. Papile said that Mexico is having a good year in terms of film and, as a result, they are getting more and more requests for Mexican productions.

Noche de circo, by Alan Nadal Piantini, closed the Film Festival at the Palacio del Cine Bella Terra Mall in Santiago. The night before, this opera prima by the Dominican director impressed the viewing public at the Blue Mall Film Palace.

To conclude the Festival activities, national and international filmmakers, members of the film industry, representatives of the organization and distinguished members of the Mexican diplomatic corps took part in a cocktail party given by the General Directorate of Film. Dr. Leonel Fernández; FCGD director Omar de la Cruz; Ellis Pérez, DGCINE director and Mexican Ambassador José Ignacio Piña, took the opportunity to thank those present and to invite them to participate in the 2014 edition of the Film Festival.

During the 7th Dominican Global Film Festival, 96 films were shown to an appreciative audience in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Nagua, Puerto Plata and Cap Cana. Also, 28 industry seminars were held to educate and create awareness and updated knowledge among students and local filmmakers.

The FCGD jury for the Opera Prima competition unanimously selected Trabajadores (Workers) as the winner. Juan Carlos Arciniegas, renowned Colombian journalist and host of CNN’s “Showbiz” presided over the jury made up of Marivell Contreras, Dominican writer and journalist and Carlos Mario Pineda, Colombian professor of film appreciation and an expert in cultural management and promotion.

The film entries that comprise this new Opera Prima section were the Brazilian Cores (Colors) by director Francisco García; Chilean-French co-production, El Verano de los peces voladores, by Marcela Said; the Spanish film, Fin, by Jorge Torregrosa; Las Mariposas de Sadourní, an Argentine film by Darío Nardi; Cuban film, Melaza, by Carlos Lechuga; the Uruguayan, Tanta Agua, by directors Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge; another Argentine film Todos tenemos un plan by Ana Piterbarg and, finally, Mexican-German co-production, Trabajadores, by José Luis Valle.

Director who came to FCGD 2013

Because the movies are the main protagonists of all festivals, the programming of FCGD 2013 renewed its commitment to select and show relevant and high quality movies from the world of independent moviemakers.

Carlos Cuarón came this year with his Besos de Azúcar;  Hernan Goldfrid brought his Tesis sobre un homicidio; Manolo Barroso presented Todas las mujeres;  Miriam Kruishoop with Greencard Warriors and Dario Nardi with Las mariposas de Sadourní.

Jorge Algora came from Spain to share his movie, Inevitable; Gustavo Pazmín from Colombia with his documentary La eterna noche de las doce lunas; Rafael Lara showed Cinco de Mayo: La Batalla; Francisco García, Colores; Nelson Peña, A South Bronx Family and Ellin Jimmerson with her important documentary The Second Cooler.

The Diaspora and it Protagonists

At this year’s 2013 edition, Dominican film from the Diaspora played a stellar role. They came to share their experience and to motivate those here who wish to follow their footsteps. They cam shared the realities, successes and challenges they have confronted.

There were various young Dominicans who came back to tell their stories, including Rayniel Rufino, Laura Gómez, Solly Durán, José Guillermo Cortines, Elvis Nolasco, Freddy Vargas and Nelson Peña along with veterans like Armando Guareño, Juan Fernández, Manny Pérez, Jessy Terrero and  Ulysses Terrero. There were also those who have gained popularity in the country like, Bladimir Abud and Cheddy García, who shared their time and training activities.

The Industry – Between Business and Art

Attorney Thomas Crowell, a specialist in US Film Law; the reputed producer Michelle Materre and Spanish Actor, Carlos Bardem also gave workshops and talks on the various aspects of the film industry that is ultimately based in the art of acting and production of movies.
