Four gala films on diverse issues are part of our exhibition.
FREE FRENCH FILM CYCLE BEING HELD AT FUNGLODE
(Santo Domingo, January 19, 2014) – The Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD), the General Directorate of Film (DGCINE) and the Alliance Francaise of Santo Domingo are presenting a series of four gala feature films between January 30 until February 2nd.
“Contra las cuerdas”, “Ya basta”, “Todo lo que brilla” and “13 m²” have been selected to be shown in the auditorium of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), free of charge and open to the general public. All projections will begin at 7:30 pm.
The French Film Cycle will be inaugurated on Thursday January 30 at 7:00 pm with “Dan les cordes” (“Against the Ropes”), which is the story of a trio comprised of a boxing coach, his daughter and his niece. However, the French Boxing Championship, in which the two girls are competing, will cast doubts on the equilibrium of the small family. Between the two female boxers, once friends and confidants, a dangerous rivalry is brewing that goes beyond the ring.
On Friday January 31, “Barakat” (“Ya Basta”) will be shown in the FUNGLODE auditorium at 7:30 pm. An award winning film, “Barakat” underscores the important role of women. Algerian Director Ms. Djamila Sharaoui narrates the life of a young doctor called Amel who makes great efforts to be an exemplary professional and to lead a good life despite the civil war going on around her in the 1990s.
This screening will be preceded by an interesting panel discussion: “Experiences of Directors and their Opera Prima.” The panel, to be held at 5 pm, will be given by Dominican filmmakers Juan Basanta, Bladimir Abud and Ronni Castillo.
On Saturday February 1st, “Tout ce qui brille” (All that Glitters) will be shown in the auditorium. The movie is about Ely and Lila, two young women who are like sisters, living on the outskirts of Paris. Together, among little white lies and mischief, they will decide to cross the bridge that separates their dreamy lives from a world of happiness where everything is possible.
The Film Cycle will end on Sunday February 2nd with the screening of “13 m²”, an action film in which José, Farouk and Réza seek refuge in a 13 square meter basement after having robbed an armored truck. Hiding out with their booty, regret and oppression of being holed up in the closed basement, causes them to turn on each other with deceit and confrontations.
The French Film Cycle is an initiative of the Alliance Francaise of Santo Domingo, the General Directorate of Film (DGCINE), the Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD), the Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI), the Center for Francophile Studies and the Institut Français.
