Film Festival begins showing films from United Kingdom

(Santo Domingo, November 14, 2013)  The production The Angel’s Share was the film selected to formally open the screenings from the UK as part of the 7th edition of the Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD).

The film by British director Ken Loach won a Jury Prize at Cannes 2012.  It is a comic fable which tells the story of four friends and their possibility for finding new opportunities.

Prior to the screening of the film, the UK Embassy in the Dominican Republic organized a gathering where the audience interacted with the staff of the diplomatic mission.

Steven Fisher, British Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, thanked the Fundacion Global de Democracia y Desarollo (FUNGLODE) for allowing the British film industry to be part of this celebration.

“I am very grateful to FUNGLODE for choosing us as the guest country this year and for allowing us to enjoy such a masterful event,” he said.

Fisher also spoke about the path along which he traveled with the Embassy team from the first moment he was notified of the proposal to join the FCGD 2013.

“I remember the first day that Omar and Yvette came to visit me in my office and they talked of inviting the UK to the Festival, and I just thought ‘how much it will cost?’ Today I am happy and grateful that the only cost for us is to enjoy this great experience,” he said.

The Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers, part of the British Army Music Corps, delighted the crowd with a brief musical introduction before the showing of the film.

The opening ceremony was held at the Cultural Center of Telecommunications (CCT).
