Cortines: “One must be professional and disciplined in any part of the world”

(Santo Domingo, November 16, 2013)  Dominican actor and singer José Guillermo Cortines said that during the development of his Actor’s Studio, acting both in the United States as in the Dominican Republic is the challenge and that’s why “one must be professional and disciplined in order to work anywhere in the world,” he said.

Cortines spoke at a workshop organized by the Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD) this Saturday November 16th at the Palace of Cinema in the Blue Mall shopping center.

He noted the importance of doing everything tactically, not advancing too fast on the way to winning.  As an example he cited his experience in passing from the Dominican market to that in the United States, “everyone wants to make films in United States, I started in Miami and in this way I am making myself known in the U.S. market.”

He encouraged young people to continue fighting for their dreams, preparing and studying so that once reaching success they will be well prepared.  “You have to fight for what you want so the bigger the sacrifice, the greater will be the reward.”

He argued that if he had not developed his career in the country, he would not have been successful abroad.

Speaking of his method to interpret a role, the Dominican artist said he relied on himself, but also acknowledged the contributions from the famous actress and acting teacher, Adriana Barraza, who evaluated his work and offered advice about how to improve his acting.

Referring to Dominican cinema, he said it is making headway with more productions thanks to the film law.

He stressed the importance of changing the usual topics in Dominican films for global issues that can be of interest in most countries.

However he added that it is the public which chooses the themes of films, and that “when the public changes its taste for these, the film themes will change because producers want their movies to be consumed.”

Students, national and international actors and world stars attended the workshop taught by Cortines.
